Get to Know Me

Hi, friends! I wanted to do a blog post about some fun (and not so fun) facts about me so you all can get to know me a little better.  Because truth is, there’s only so much you get to know through my pictures : )  I know I said on Instagram that I was thinking of doing a blog post about certain trends that I’m not a fan of PLUS some facts about me but I want to really go in depth on both topics and decided that I’m going to split those topics up into two different blog posts.  So, stay tuned for a blog post on my opinion of different trends in the future : )

Now, I know I’ve shared this on Instagram but I do have an exciting event that’s coming up in the near future….I’m getting married! My fiance, Chris and I are getting married over this Memorial Day weekend in May and we are so excited.  But I’m not going to lie, the wedding stress is REAL! I have so much on my plate right now that it’s getting really hard to juggle everything, so please bare with me in the next coming months!

Now that we’re on the topic of weddings, it’s insane how crazy expensive everything and anything that has to do with the term “wedding” is.  For example, I just spent over $700 on our invitations alone…crazy, right?! There’s also so many little details that you just don’t think about on the top of your head.  Like, table decorations for the guestbook table, table numbers, place cards, seating charts, etc.  It can be very over whelming at times but I know it will all be worth it in the end, or so that’s what everyone keeps telling me! Just kidding : )

I will eventually share more and more details on my wedding but for now, I will just share the designer of my wedding dress.  I am going to wear a Pronovias wedding gown and I seriously can’t wait to wear it.  When I went wedding dress shopping at Pebbles Bridal, it was the very first dress I tried on (how weird is that?!).  I tried on a few other other dresses after that, but kept going back to the first dress I tried on.  I of course took my mom with me, as well as Chris’ mom and grandma (Oma), and one of my best friend’s Melissa.  It’s nice to have a little crew with you so everyone can tell you their opinions and you can see their pictures of you in the gown on their phones.  Can’t wait for you guys to see it!

A not so fun fact about me is that I have had a headache everyday since the year 2012.  Unfortunately, I am not joking.  I legit have not gone one day without a headache since early 2012.  I have been to countless numbers of doctors, have had several tests done on me, MRI’s, X-Rays and everything comes back normal. I have tried everything from medications to acupuncture to Botox and more.  You name it, I’ve tried it.  I cope with my pain by using peppermint essential oil because no pills (Prescription or over-the-counter) work on me.  I literally do not go anywhere without my peppermint oil.  My friends and co-workers joke with me because whenever they smell peppermint, they know I’m near by. My worst headache year was definitely 2014.  I was in and out of the hospital frequently and generally did not go a week without seeing a doctor for my headaches.  In the past few years, they have gotten a lot better but I still wake up with a headache and go to bed with one.  I will keep this fact short though because I’m sure most people could care less about this : ) But if you would like to know more, feel free to send me a message or e-mail.

Now that I’ve mentioned that I have co-workers, I’ll tell you guys a little about my job.  I work with kids in an after-school program within my local school district.  Primarily, I work with Kindergartners and first graders.  I’ve been doing it for almost three years and I love it.  It honestly doesn’t even feel like a job, so fun!  I do that part-time and also take care of my parents who both have early on-set dementia. I won’t go too in depth of this because again, I’m sure you guys would rather talk about something else, right? : )  To keep this short, my mom has a rare form of dementia called Frontal Temporal Dementia.  This is a mental disorder that usually starts in a person’s 40’s-50’s and progressively gets worse as time goes on.  ALS is also incorporated into this disease at a later stage.  Her memory is actually not heavily impacted, but rather her emotions and speech are.  She also really struggles in social situations and doesn’t always know how to act properly.  Since my mom kind of had me at an older age (37), I have never known a normal version of her.  She has always been like this around me and when I was a kid, I was afraid of her because I never knew what to expect or what mood she was going to be in.  This is also a disease that runs in my family.  I have already had three family members pass on from this and my mom will be next.

My dad has developed (normal) dementia only within the last three years.  He has always been my best friend so it is really hard to see him transition into this disease. He really struggles with his memory and lost his driver’s license right away.  If you can imagine, the combination of the two is very over whelming so I just have to try and take each day at a time.  My fiance and I live with my parents so we can help take care of them.  I do have three siblings, one sister and two half-brothers that are all older than me.  My sister lives in Chicago while she attends grad school and she does help a lot with my parents (from a distance) as much as she can.  My brothers and I have different moms, so they only sometimes help out with my dad if needed.

Now that I’ve started a blog, it’s a great escape for me while dealing with my parents and I’m so happy that I decided to start one.  The very first blogger that I fell in love with was Julia Engel.  A few years ago, I came across her Instagram and was in such awe of her life, and all the pretty pictures that she posted.  I thought to myself, “Wow-that is so cool how someone can live their life like that!” The sad part is, I never even considered starting my own blog for YEARS because I always thought that I wasn’t pretty enough to start one.  I talked myself out of it for some time until I was in my last semester of college.  Everyone around me was talking about all of their corporate jobs that they were going to start working at post graduation and I just kept thinking about how I would hate an office/corporate job.  I told myself that there has to be something out there for me to let my creativity loose.  Then I finally thought that I should start my own blog! It has become my passion and I can’t wait to share all of my thoughts and ideas with you guys.

Now that I’ve shared some facts about me, I’ll fill you guys in on the details of this outfit.  The jeans that I’m wearing are from Just Black Denim and are super comfortable.  I paired it with a criss-cross long sleeve from Express and the blanket scarf is from Nordstrom.  I’m also wearing my favorite pair of black booties from Forever 21.  I’ve had these for over a year and I wear them all the time.  Highly recommend!

I’m also wearing some great bracelet pieces from Boho Betty.  Use my code ‘SOULOFSTRIPES’ to receive 20% off your next order!

Hope you all had fun getting to know me a little better and if there is anything else you would like to know, do tell! Thanks so much for reading and letting me tell some of my story, I truly appreciate it! Have a great day, everyone!

Oh my sweet, Bri, that's a lot to deal with for anyone. I have older parents too and it brings unique challenges (my dad passed away almost 8 years ago and my mum has had cancer for years). I'm here if you need anything! xoxo D (
